Are You Depositing or Withdrawing? The Simple Mindset Shift That Will Transform Your Business

Today’s episode-turned-blog is a short one, but it packs a BIG mindset punch.
It’s a concept that, once you see it clearly, you can’t unsee it:

Are you depositing into your business “bank account” more than you’re trying to withdraw?

Let’s get into what that means — and why it matters SO much for your relationships, your social media, and your sales.

Listen to the podcast here:

🌅 Starting My Day With Gratitude (And Why It’s Relevant)

Before we dive in, I’ve been starting my mornings with gratitude — not in a notebook (because honestly, writing at 5:30 a.m. is not my vibe), but mentally.

Before I even get out of bed, I pause and say:

  • “Thank you for another morning…”
  • “Thank you for my health…”
  • “Thank you for my home…”
  • “Thank you for my students…”
  • “Thank you for good people in my life…”

This little habit has completely shifted my days — and it makes such a difference in how I approach business.

Gratitude = deposits.

And that’s exactly what today’s analogy is all about.

💡 The Bank Account Analogy That Changed Everything

I heard this on a podcast and it immediately clicked:

👉 In business, are you depositing more into your “account” than you’re withdrawing?

Think of depositing as:

  • Giving value
  • Engaging with people
  • Building relationships
  • Supporting others
  • Connecting on their posts
  • Showing up consistently
  • Creating content that helps, inspires, or entertains

And withdrawing as:

  • Asking people to buy
  • Asking people to join
  • Asking for comments, likes, or shares
  • Pitching in the DMs
  • Promoting your offer

Just like a real bank account:

💳 If you try to withdraw more than you’ve deposited… you overdraft.

You lose trust.
You lose connection.
You lose momentum.
You lose influence.

Social selling works when the balance is in the positive — not the negative.

🚩 A Real Example: The Spammy Message I Received This Week

This morning, I opened Facebook Messenger and saw a message from someone I do not know well.

Our only previous interaction was her joining my free Facebook group… and not responding when I welcomed her.

She sent:

“I have a business opportunity I think you’d be great for! Want to hear more?”

No relationship.
No rapport.
No context.
No deposits.

And what made it stranger?

My social media is FULL of the business I’m already in — a company I love — which she would’ve seen if she took 10 seconds to scroll.

Then, when I didn’t respond (because… life), she followed up again with details about her comp plan and bonuses.

🚫 No connection. No conversation. No value.
🚫 Just withdrawals.

This is exactly what damages the reputation of our entire industry.

And it’s exactly why this message felt so misaligned and icky.

❤️ Let’s Flip It: What Deposits Actually Look Like

Before you ever drop an invitation, ask yourself:

Have I deposited enough into this relationship to earn the right to make this ask?

Deposits look like:

✔ Engaging with their posts
✔ Responding to their stories
✔ Asking about their life, family, or interests
✔ Cheering on their wins
✔ Being a real human they recognize
✔ Offering support or encouragement
✔ Giving value through content
✔ Being consistently present in their world

When you make deposits, two things happen:

  1. People trust you
  2. People feel safe receiving from you

You’re no longer a stranger “cold pitching.”
You’re someone they’ve gotten to know — and someone they want to hear from.

📱 This Also Applies to Your Social Media Content

Before you post something asking for support in your business, check the last 5–10 posts on your profile.

Are they:

  • Entertaining?
  • Educational?
  • Inspirational?
  • Helpful?
  • Relatable?
  • Valuable?

Or are your posts:

  • Vague
  • Random
  • All personal
  • Or only business pitches?

If you haven’t been consistently depositing value, it will feel off — to others AND to yourself — when you suddenly ask for a sale or share your opportunity.

⚖️ But Also… Don’t Be Afraid to Withdraw

Now, I know some of you are thinking:

“But Lindsay, I give and give and give… and I NEVER ask.”

And let’s be honest:

Women do this all the time.
We deposit endlessly… and then feel guilty withdrawing.

But healthy relationships — and healthy businesses — require both.

So yes:

💰 Deposit generously.
💰 But also withdraw confidently when the time is right.

You are allowed to ask.
You are allowed to sell.
You are allowed to promote your offer.
You are allowed to make money.

Balance matters.

✔ Your Action Steps from Today

Here’s what I encourage you to do:

1️⃣ Audit your relationships

Are you depositing? Or only withdrawing?

2️⃣ Audit your content

Is it valuable? Or is every post an ask?

3️⃣ Audit your DMs

Are you connecting? Or pitching strangers?

4️⃣ And then… withdraw when appropriate

You’ve earned the right to.
