Back to Basics: Why Your Business Doesn’t Need More Motivation—It Needs More Discipline

Hey friend! Welcome back to another Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust Podcast blog recap. I’m Lindsay Dollinger—high school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, direct seller, and your go-to girl for building your network marketing business the right way so you can create the life you dream about… and actually enjoy it. ✨

This episode is inspired by a live recording I did after returning from a company conference—full of inspiration but also full of that “okay… now what?” feeling.

If you’ve been traveling, enjoying the pool, coming back from a big event, or just feeling out of your groove, this one is for you.

Let’s talk about getting back to basics, building momentum, and the truth bomb that hit me like a ton of bricks last week:

You don’t lack motivation.
You lack discipline.

Oof.
Yep. Let’s unpack it.

Listen in here:

Coming Off Events, Vacations, and “Life” Seasons

I batch-recorded a LOT of podcast episodes in June because I knew my summer would be full of:

  • travel
  • professional development
  • family time
  • downtime
  • and zero routine

And while all of that was amazing and needed, I found myself doing a whole lot of absorbing
and not a whole lot of action taking.

Can you relate?

Maybe you:

  • came back from a conference
  • are deep in summer mode
  • have been feeling unproductive
  • or feel like your routine is dust
  • or you’re “waiting for August” or “waiting for the kids to go back to school”

This is exactly where the “D-word” comes in:

Discipline.

Not hustle.
Not pressure.
Not burnout.

But discipline—the quiet, almost boring consistency that separates people who wish from people who win.

If I Could Only Pick ONE Thing to Restart My Business… It’s This.

In my Foundations of Social Selling course, I teach the core elements your business needs:
Connections, Conversations, and Content.

But if I could only choose ONE to focus on to get momentum fast?

Connections.

(And yes, I’m combining connections + conversations together!)

This is the foundation of EVERYTHING.

Before you sell…
Before you scale…
Before you build a brand…
Before you master content…

You must connect with people consistently.

Here’s What “Connections” Actually Looks Like in Your Daily Business

This isn’t random “hey girl” messages.
This isn’t spamming.
This isn’t pitching.

Connections can look like:

✔️ Birthday Messages

A simple “Happy Birthday!” in their inbox or on their post.
(And I agree: using birthdays to pitch is icky. Don’t do it.)

Pro tip:
If you’ve wished someone a happy birthday for 4 years and they’ve never replied?
Unfriend.
Protect your energy and your algorithm.

✔️ Story Replies

Stories are the fastest way to slide naturally into someone’s inbox without being weird.

React.
Comment.
Ask a simple question.

Do 5–10 story responses per day and watch how fast your engagement shifts.

✔️ Engaging with Your List of “People Already Paying Attention”

Anyone who:

  • comments on your posts
  • replies to your stories
  • watches your content regularly
  • votes in your polls

…is warm.
Reach out. Say thanks, ask a question, start a real convo.

Connection is the heartbeat of your business.

Make a Minimum Daily Goal (and Commit Like Your Business Depends On It—Because It Does)

Ask yourself:

👉 How many people will I intentionally connect with every day?
5?
10?
25?
50?
100?

Remember:
The number you choose is directly connected to the results you get.

Small goals bring small growth.
Bigger goals bring bigger growth.

No shame either way—just honesty.

Next Up: Content (But Make It Simple)

Once connections are flowing, make a minimum content commitment:

  • 1 post a day
  • OR 3 posts a week
  • OR a weekly live video
  • OR a weekly reel
  • OR a combo

Don’t overthink it.
Don’t make it “perfect.”
Just show up.

And yes, your personal profile needs love too—because not everyone is in your group, watching your lives, or seeing your VIP content.

People buy from people, not ghost accounts.

Find a System That Actually Works FOR You

Your discipline becomes easier when your workflow matches your natural rhythms.

Ask yourself:

⭐ Am I more productive early morning?
⭐ Mid-morning?
⭐ Late at night?
⭐ During nap time?
⭐ On my lunch break?

Then build your “work hours” around that.

If you’re sending messages—don’t do it at 11 p.m. when people are sleeping.
If you’re doing content creation, maybe that’s your quiet nighttime work.
If you’re doing follow-ups, maybe mid-morning is ideal.

Be honest about when your energy is best and plan around THAT.

And If You Need Accountability… USE IT.

If your team has:

  • power hours
  • Zoom working sessions
  • co-working blocks

USE THEM.

If not?
Start one.

Invite:

  • sidelines
  • crossline friends
  • biz buddies
  • your masterminds

You don’t need to be in the same company—95% of our daily tasks are the same anyway:
Connect.
Post.
Follow up.
Repeat.

These sessions rebuild your discipline fast.

The Hard Truth I Needed (and Maybe You Do Too)

You can be motivated.
You can want it badly.
You can dream about the rank.
You can visualize the bonus.
You can imagine the trips, the income, the options.

But…

**Motivation won’t get you there.

Discipline will.**

Discipline is:

  • doing the work even when you don’t feel like it
  • honoring your commitment to yourself
  • showing up on the days you’d rather scroll
  • being intentional, not “busy”
  • choosing long-term wins over short-term comfort

And discipline is a habit you get to build.
Starting today.

Your Challenge This Week

I want you to:

⭐ Choose your daily connection number

⭐ Choose your content commitment

⭐ Choose your working time block

⭐ Choose ONE system that’ll support your discipline

⭐ Stick to it—even when it’s inconvenient
