Want to Succeed in Direct Sales? Do the Basics Better.
Hi friend! Welcome back to the Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust. I’m Lindsay Dollinger—high school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, and direct seller who empowers women to run their businesses the right way so they can make the money they deserve and live a life full of purpose, profits, and plenty of travel.
Now that introductions are out of the way…
Let’s get into today’s Biz Tip Thursday!
And yes… this one comes straight from my car (per usual 😂). I don’t have my little mic with me, so you might hear some extra road noise, but hey—that’s real life, and we roll with it.
🎃 A Quick Hocus-Pocus Detour
It’s a Saturday evening and I’m headed to pick up dinner—my sister has friends over and we’re about to watch Hocus Pocus again. This cracks me up because my team and I literally had a Hocus Pocus Zoom night yesterday. Apparently, this is just my entire October vibe!
But with a 10-minute drive ahead of me, I knew it was the perfect moment to drop a quick but powerful biz tip that can change everything for you.
And it’s this:
⭐️ The People Who Succeed Aren’t Doing More…
They’re Just Doing the Basics Better
Seriously—let that soak in.
They’re not necessarily more talented.
They’re not working 10 hours a day.
They’re not magical unicorns with perfect circumstances.
They’re just mastering the basics and doing them better and more consistently than everyone else.
I heard a podcast this morning that summed it up perfectly:
👉 Most people either have talent OR work ethic.
👉 Work ethic will always win.
You can be the most talented person in the room, but if you’re not putting in the reps—if you’re not inviting, not following up, not posting, not showing up for your people—then your results will reflect that.
But if you’re the one who shows up day after day after day?
Talent grows. Skills grow. Confidence grows.
And suddenly people start calling you “naturally gifted,” when really…
You just out-worked your old excuses.
And if you do happen to have talent AND a solid work ethic?
Your business growth will explode.
🧡 You Can Learn Every Skill You Don’t Yet Have
So many women stop themselves before they even start.
“I’m not confident enough.”
“I don’t know how to sell.”
“I’m too new.”
“I don’t have experience.”
“She’s growing faster than me.”
But here’s the reality:
Every single skill in this industry can be learned.
Every. Single. One.
The only difference between the women at the top and the women still overthinking is this:
👉 They decided not to let excuses win.
👉 They stopped getting in their heads.
👉 They took daily action on the basics.
And then they did them a little better every month.
📋 So What Are “The Basics”?
If you’re wondering what “the basics” actually ARE, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered.
I created a printable Daily Method of Operations (DMO) checklist that you can grab for free on my website:
This is the baseline.
The foundation.
The “do these things every day and your business WILL grow” list.
And for my personal team, I’ve built an expanded version with even more depth—but it still comes down to one thing:
👉 Doing the basics. Consistently. And then doing them better.
Let’s break down what “better” can look like.
⭐️ Doing the Basics Better Looks Like…
✔️ If the DMO says:
“Add 1–3 new Facebook friends or IG followers a day”
Doing the basics better looks like:
Adding 5–10.
✔️ If the DMO says:
“Invite someone today”
Doing the basics better looks like:
Inviting 2–3, especially when you’re already in conversation with them.
✔️ If the DMO says:
“Follow up with yesterday’s leads”
Doing the basics better looks like:
Following up + adding your new prospects to a tracker + checking back on older convos.
✔️ If the DMO says:
“Show up on social media”
Doing the basics better looks like:
Creating a value-packed post, using stories, engaging with ideal clients, and replying to comments.
✔️ If you finish your DMO early?
Use the extra time to:
- Follow up with one more person
- Engage on a few more ideal clients’ profiles
- Brainstorm a promotion
- Record a quick video
- Add a post to your VIP group
- Learn something new
- Plan tomorrow’s posts
Success doesn’t require perfect talent.
It requires consistent effort.

“I didn’t let myself get in my head. I just went for it. I asked everyone. I didn’t let pride get in the way.”
Powerful, right?
The women at the top aren’t overthinking—they’re doing.
