If you’ve ever caught yourself daydreaming about traveling more, having more flexibility, making extra income online, or building a life that feels a little more you… then this blog is for you.
Because honestly?
There is SO much outdated information floating around about becoming a travel advisor. And after opening my own agency, At Last I See The World Travel, earlier this year, I get questions about this literally all the time.
Questions like:
- “Can you actually make money as a travel advisor?”
- “Do you need a degree?”
- “Do you have to quit your job?”
- “What if I haven’t traveled everywhere yet?”
- “Is this actually legit?”
So today, I want to pull back the curtain a little bit and talk about what nobody tells you about becoming a travel advisor… because this industry looks VERY different than it did even a few years ago.
First of All… No, You Do NOT Need to Quit Your Job
Let’s squash this myth immediately.
I am still:
- a full-time high school Spanish teacher
- a travel agency owner
- a business coach
- a podcaster
- and somehow still functioning most days 😂
So no, you do NOT have to quit your job tomorrow to become a travel advisor.
And honestly? I get really frustrated when people in this industry push the idea that you can only be successful if you go “all in” immediately.
That simply isn’t true.
Most successful travel advisors start part-time.
Most build slowly.
Most get their first clients through relationships.
Most learn as they go.
And that’s okay.
Why I Started Looking Into Becoming a Travel Advisor
For me, travel always felt like this tiny reward I had to “earn” after surviving work first.
If you’re a teacher, nurse, corporate employee, or honestly just someone stuck in the traditional PTO cycle… you probably understand exactly what I mean.
You:
- count down to vacation days
- obsess over flight prices
- try to squeeze everything possible into one trip
- and come home needing a vacation from your vacation
And eventually, I started asking myself:
Why does travel feel so limited?
Why did it feel like life was:
work → vacation → work → vacation → repeat forever?
That feeling started getting heavier and heavier for me.
Not because I hated teaching.
I actually LOVE teaching.
But because there was this little voice inside me saying:
“There has to be more than this.”
More flexibility.
More freedom.
More ownership over my life.
More opportunities to actually LIVE while I’m building my career.
Modern Travel Advisors Are NOT What You Think
A lot of people still picture travel agents as:
- sitting inside a storefront office
- booking random flights all day
- working in a call center
- or pushing MLM-style sales tactics
And while yes, there are MLM-style travel companies out there, the modern travel advisor world is honestly nothing like most people imagine.
Today’s travel advisors are:
- relationship-based business owners
- content creators
- marketers
- niche experts
- community builders
- trip designers
- and experience curators
And the coolest part?
Most of us build businesses around the kind of travel we already love.
For me?
That’s:
- Disney
- cruises
- river cruises
- Europe
- and helping women build businesses that support the life they actually want
Do You Need Experience to Become a Travel Advisor?
This is another HUGE myth.
People constantly say things like:
- “I haven’t traveled enough.”
- “I’ve never been on a cruise.”
- “I don’t know enough yet.”
Friend… nobody starts as an expert.
You learn.
That’s it.
Most successful travel advisors simply start as people who:
- love travel
- naturally help others plan trips
- enjoy researching destinations
- love talking about vacations
- and genuinely care about helping people
That’s the foundation.
Everything else can be learned.
The Skills You Already Have Probably Transfer
This part is SO important.
Women massively underestimate how valuable their current skills already are.
For example, teaching gave me:
- organization skills
- communication skills
- customer service skills
- multitasking
- planning
- leadership
- patience
- problem-solving
All of those transfer directly into running a successful travel business.
Your current career probably already gave you transferable skills too.
So… How Do Travel Advisors Actually Make Money?
Okay, let’s talk about the thing everyone is Googling privately 😂
Travel advisors primarily earn commissions from travel suppliers.
That means:
- cruise lines
- Disney
- hotels
- tour companies
- all-inclusive resorts
- river cruise companies
- vacation package suppliers
…pay commissions to the agency when bookings are made.
Here’s a SUPER simplified example:
A $5,000 vacation at a 10% commission could generate around $500 in commission.
And then your host agency splits that commission with you based on your contract.
Now imagine:
- repeat clients
- referrals
- family vacations
- destination weddings
- group cruises
- river cruise groups
That momentum builds over time.
Your First Clients Are Usually NOT Strangers
This is the part people overcomplicate.
Most new travel advisors get their first bookings from:
- coworkers
- friends
- family
- social media connections
- people already asking for travel advice anyway
People are ALREADY spending money on travel.
The difference is:
they’d often rather book with someone they know and trust.
And trust matters WAY more than follower count.
The Truth Nobody Wants to Say
Nobody is coming to magically hand you your dream life.
Not your boss.
Not your job.
Not “someday.”
If you want:
- more flexibility
- more income
- more travel
- more freedom
- more ownership over your life
…eventually you have to decide to go after it.
And honestly?
That’s scary.
But messy action beats waiting forever.
Every single time.
Is Becoming a Travel Advisor for Everyone?
No.
And I actually think it’s harmful when people say:
“Everyone can do this!”
Could everyone technically become a travel advisor?
Sure.
Should everyone?
Definitely not.
This business takes:
- consistency
- learning
- relationship building
- visibility
- patience
- communication
- and personal responsibility
But if you love travel…
love helping people…
and want to build something of your own…
this industry can absolutely change your life.
Why I Built My Agency Differently
One thing I realized early on is that there’s a BIG difference between:
learning how to book trips
and
learning how to build a travel business.
That’s why inside At Last I See The World Travel, I focus heavily on:
- marketing
- visibility
- systems
- client retention
- branding
- business strategy
- workflows
- content creation
- and long-term growth
Because booking travel is only ONE piece of building a successful business.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been sitting there quietly thinking:
“Maybe I could actually do this…”
…I just want you to know that it’s possible.
You do NOT need:
- thousands of followers
- years of experience
- a perfect website
- or permission from anyone else
You just need to be willing to learn, grow, and take the first step.
Because the women building incredible lives are usually the ones willing to start before they feel fully ready.
And maybe — just maybe — becoming a travel advisor could be the thing that completely changes the trajectory of your life too.
