Dive into the full episode:
We’ve officially made it to Q4.
October. November. December.
And this is usually the point in the year when business owners fall into one of two camps.
Camp #1 is in full panic mode: “I HAVE THREE MONTHS LEFT TO HIT EVERY GOAL I SET IN JANUARY.”
Camp #2 has mentally checked out and decided, Eh, I’ll get serious again in January.
Neither is particularly helpful.
Q4 isn’t about desperately trying to cram twelve months of goals into twelve weeks. And it definitely isn’t about coasting through the holidays and hoping January magically fixes everything.
It’s about being intentional.
Because the work you do during the final three months of the year isn’t just about finishing 2026 strong.
It’s also creating the runway for your 2027 travel business.
So instead of adding 47 more things to your to-do list, let’s build a simple, profitable Q4 plan that helps you focus on what actually matters.
Step 1: Define What a Successful Q4 Actually Looks Like
Before we talk about marketing, sales, content, or Wave Season, answer this:
What would make you genuinely happy on December 31?
Not what another travel advisor is doing.
Not what Instagram tells you a successful business should look like.
And not necessarily the goals you wrote down nine months ago when you had a fresh planner and all that New Year motivation.
What would make you look back at these three months and think:
Yep. I’m proud of that.
Maybe you want to generate another $10,000 in commission.
Maybe you want ten new bookings.
Maybe you have group space you want to fill.
Maybe you want five new clients or ten repeat clients to book their next vacations.
Or maybe your biggest Q4 win has nothing to do with immediate revenue.
Maybe you’re currently operating your business with approximately 700 tabs open in your brain and you desperately need to organize your CRM.
Maybe you need workflows.
Maybe you need email templates.
Maybe you need an actual follow-up process.
Maybe success means entering January with new leads, consultations scheduled, and an email list full of potential clients who already know who you are.
There isn’t one correct answer.
But you need an answer.
Otherwise, you’ll spend the next three months performing random acts of marketing and hoping they somehow add up to a successful quarter.
No, thank you.
Define the destination before you start driving.
And please resist the temptation to make twelve different things your priority.
You have three months.
And Thanksgiving.
And Christmas.
And life.
What matters most?
Start there.
Step 2: Reverse Engineer Your Q4 Goals
Once you know the outcome you want, it’s time to work backward.
Too many business owners set a revenue goal and immediately ask:
Okay, so what should I post on Instagram?
Your Instagram post is several steps removed from your actual business goal.
Instead, use this formula:
Goal → Bookings → Inquiries → Leads → Marketing Activities
Let’s say you want to generate $10,000 in commission during Q4.
How many bookings would you need to reach approximately $10,000?
If your average booking generates $1,000 in commission, maybe you need ten bookings.
Great.
Now ask:
How many qualified inquiries do I need to generate ten bookings?
If approximately half of your qualified inquiries typically convert, you might need twenty inquiries.
Now go back another step.
How many leads do you need to create those twenty inquiries?
And finally:
What marketing activities will generate those leads?
NOW we’re talking about your content and marketing.
Maybe you need to:
- Send a weekly email.
- Follow up with past clients.
- Promote your lead magnet.
- Talk consistently about the type of travel you want to sell.
- Host a webinar or virtual event.
- Create educational content.
- Ask for referrals.
- Reconnect with previous inquiries.
- Follow up with people who said, “Maybe next year.”
See the difference?
You’re no longer waking up on Tuesday thinking, Ughhhh…what am I supposed to post today?
Your marketing has a purpose.
You’re trying to generate a certain number of leads because you need approximately X inquiries to generate X bookings to reach your revenue goal.
That is a business strategy.
And if you don’t know your conversion numbers yet, that’s okay.
Make your best estimate and start tracking.
The numbers don’t have to be perfect for them to give you direction.
Step 3: Remember That Your Q4 Marketing Is Building Your Q1 Pipeline
This may be the most important mindset shift you make this quarter:
Your Q4 activity creates your Q1 pipeline.
Marketing doesn’t always produce an immediate sale.
Someone might discover you in October.
They follow you.
Watch a Reel.
Read another post.
Join your email list.
Open a few emails.
And then January comes around and their family starts talking about summer vacation.
Suddenly, they’re ready for help.
Who do they think of?
You.
Someone could download your river cruise guide in November, talk about a multigenerational vacation over Thanksgiving, and inquire about a 2027 river cruise in January.
That November lead just became a January inquiry.
This is why I like thinking about Q4 as planting while you’re harvesting.
Yes, you’re harvesting.
You’re making offers.
Following up.
Closing bookings.
Asking for the sale.
Generating revenue.
But you’re also planting.
You’re growing your audience.
Adding people to your email list.
Creating educational content.
Building relationships.
Establishing expertise.
Giving people reasons to remember you.
So when you post something and it doesn’t immediately generate a booking, don’t automatically decide it “didn’t work.”
Did someone save it?
Did someone start following you?
Did someone visit your website?
Did they join your email list?
Did they send it to their spouse?
You might not know yet.
Marketing often has a much longer shelf life than we give it credit for.
Step 4: Prepare Your Travel Business for Wave Season NOW
Travel advisors, I need you to hear me on this one:
January 2 is too late to start preparing for January.
Wave Season isn’t a surprise.
It happens every year.
We know consumers are going to be thinking about travel.
We know suppliers will be promoting vacations.
We know travel advertising will increase.
We know people will start saying, “This is the year we’re finally taking that trip.”
So why wait until January to decide what you’re going to do with that attention?
Decide What You Want to Sell
You don’t have to market every cruise line, resort, destination, tour operator, theme park, and vacation your agency can technically book.
What do you want to be known for in 2027?
Cruising?
River cruising?
Luxury travel?
Disney?
All-inclusive resorts?
A specific group trip?
Choose a focus.
Warm Up Your Email List
Please don’t spend all year trying to grow an email list and then refuse to email those people because you’re worried about annoying them.
They signed up.
Email them.
Educate them. Tell stories. Answer questions. Talk about what you’re seeing in the industry and what travelers should be thinking about for 2027.
Not every email needs to say, BOOK A VACATION WITH ME RIGHT NOW.
You’re building familiarity and trust.
Follow Up With Your Warm Leads
Open your CRM.
Who requested a quote but didn’t book?
Who said, “Maybe next year”?
Who traveled with you before but hasn’t booked their next trip?
Who mentioned wanting to visit Alaska?
Who said Europe was on their bucket list?
Who wanted to take the kids to Disney “someday”?
There may be money sitting in your CRM right now.
And no, you don’t need to aggressively message everyone demanding they book something.
You can simply reconnect.
Good follow-up is good client service.
Build Your Expertise
If you want to sell more river cruises in 2027, Q4 is a great time to deepen your river cruise knowledge.
Take the supplier training.
Attend the webinar.
Study the itineraries.
Learn the differences between products.
Know which clients fit which experiences.
You do not need to know everything about every supplier in existence.
You need strong knowledge of the suppliers and products that support the business you’re intentionally trying to build.
Get Ahead on Your Content
Future You will be very grateful if you do some of January’s work now.
Create your FAQ list.
Batch a few emails.
Draft social posts.
Outline podcast episodes.
Create comparison guides.
Brainstorm your Wave Season campaigns.
Because when inquiries start coming in, you don’t also want to be sitting at your computer at 4:37 p.m. wondering what Reel you’re supposed to post that day.
Help Future You out.
Create a Way to Capture Leads
Finally, make sure potential clients have a way to raise their hands before they’re ready to book.
That could be a destination guide, cruise guide, quiz, checklist, webinar, mini-course, or another helpful resource.
The goal is to move someone from:
Random social media follower → Actual lead you can nurture
Followers are great.
But you don’t own Instagram.
You don’t own Facebook.
You definitely don’t control the algorithm.
Your email list gives you a much more direct relationship with potential clients.
So don’t wait for Wave Season to start finding people.
Build the audience now.
Step 5: Stop Making “Scaling” So Complicated
Can we make scaling less dramatic?
Online business culture sometimes makes scaling sound like you need to build a giant team, hit seven figures, launch seventeen offers, work with 400 clients, and create a travel empire.
Maybe you want that.
Maybe you absolutely do not.
I prefer a much simpler definition:
Scaling means getting more from what already works.
If referrals consistently bring you amazing clients, how can you generate more referrals?
If your email list converts better than Instagram, how can you grow your email list?
If you love planning river cruises AND they generate strong commissions, how can you sell more river cruises?
If one lead magnet consistently generates great leads, why are you making six more?
Promote the one that works.
Sometimes scaling is incredibly boring.
And I mean that as a compliment.
Sometimes scaling looks like:
“Well, this worked. Let’s do more of it.”
You don’t always need another strategy.
Your smartest Q4 move might simply be doubling down on what your business has already proven works.
Create Your One-Page Q4 Success Plan
Now let’s put all of this together.
Your Q4 business plan does not need to become a 47-page document that you create, admire for three days, and never open again.
Instead, create a one-page Q4 Success Plan with five things:
1. ONE revenue goal.
How much do you want your business to generate during Q4?
2. ONE primary offer or sales focus.
What are you intentionally marketing and selling?
3. ONE audience-growth goal.
Maybe you want 100 new email subscribers, 50 new community members, or 25 qualified leads.
4. ONE system to improve.
Choose your inquiry process, CRM, follow-up system, email marketing, onboarding, or another area that will make your business easier to run in 2027.
5. ONE weekly sales activity.
What will you do every single week that directly supports sales?
Send an email.
Follow up with five leads.
Reach out to three past clients.
Promote your lead magnet.
Ask for referrals.
Choose it.
Put it on your calendar.
And actually do it.
Then, when the next shiny business idea appears—and we both know it will—you can ask:
Does this support one of my five Q4 priorities?
If it doesn’t?
It might not need your attention right now.
Q4 Isn’t Just the End of 2026—It’s the Runway Into 2027
You don’t need to completely reinvent your travel business before December 31.
You don’t need 47 new strategies.
You don’t need to become a completely different entrepreneur.
You need clarity.
You need consistency.
And you need to actually do the things you already know move your business forward.
Define what success looks like.
Reverse engineer the numbers.
Sell intentionally.
Build your audience while you’re selling.
Prepare for Wave Season before Wave Season.
And get more from what’s already working.
Because Q4 isn’t simply the end of 2026.
It’s the runway into 2027.
The emails you send now matter.
The people you follow up with now matter.
The systems you build now matter.
The audience you grow now matters.
The goal isn’t to arrive on January 2 wondering:
Okay…what am I doing this year?
It’s to walk into 2027 thinking:
I already know what I’m doing. Let’s go.
Not frantic.
Not burned out.
Not throwing random spaghetti at the marketing wall.
Focused.
Intentional.
Profitable.
And ready for what’s next.
