Can you believe Melissa was once a major TikTok skeptic? Yep, she was convinced it would just suck up her time like a giant internet black hole. But you know how kids are these days—sending TikToks like they’re another form of currency. Eventually, she jumped onto TikTok, and who would’ve thought that this platform would launch her into the social media limelight!
Melissa made the leap from holding two jobs in the nonprofit and university sectors to focusing on just her professorship in 2022. And man, when her travel-related TikToks blew up, it was a whole new ball game. In just a year and a half, she transformed her life through TikTok travel tips that landed her in the influencer fast lane. Talk about a whirlwind!
Sailing Through Social Media: Finding a Passion in Cruising
I know I was curious about how Melissa ended up focusing on cruises, so I asked her. Turns out the algorithm played a little matchmaking! Melissa’s found out there’s a huge demand for cruise content, so she leaned into it. I mean, she’s almost seen all 50 states and is always questing for efficiency, right? Cruises quickly became her niche as they let her visit multiple destinations in one go.
Monetizing the Influence: From Viral Videos to Steady Income
Melissa isn’t just cruising for fun; she’s turned it into a full-time gig. She initially kick-started by joining TikTok’s creator program but soon realized there was potential to build her own empire. She dipped into different revenue streams—course guides, monetization strategies—you name it, she explored it! Her first viral TikTok rolled the ball, and it’s been a tidal wave of growth since then. She even admitted to hating the “influencer” label, so she sticks to “content creator.” How authentic, right?

While managing multiple platforms and audiences, Melissa still rocks her role as a business professor. She’s never canceled a class in her 15-year stretch and has even written a textbook. Surprisingly, she finds time to create fabulous, engaging content. She juggles everything like a pro!
