27 Essential Tips for First-Time Cruisers

Are you planning your first cruise vacation? Congratulations! You're about to embark on an incredible journey filled with adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences. As a cruise specialist, I've helped countless first-timers navigate the exciting (but sometimes overwhelming) world of cruise travel. Here's everything you need to know before setting sail.

Getting Started: Booking Your Perfect Cruise

  1. Choose the right cruise line for your travel style. Family-friendly options like Disney, Norwegian, Carnival, MSC, and Royal Caribbean offer different experiences than adult-only ships like Viking. There are also the luxury liners like Celebrity, Viking, AMAWaterways or Oceania.
  2. Consider cruise duration carefully. First-timers might prefer a 3-5 day sailing to test the waters before committing to longer voyages, but I'll warn you--you're going to want to book your next, longer cruise as soon as you're on the ship!
  3. Location matters!  Caribbean cruises offer tropical paradise vibes, while Alaskan cruises showcase breathtaking wilderness. Mediterranean cruises blend history and culture, and river cruising can be done in lots of countries around the world.
  4. Book early  for the best cabin selection and pricing. The most desirable staterooms sell out quickly! I'm a HUGE fan of the balcony rooms and suites for more space and other perks.
  5. Don't skip travel insurance. It's essential protection for your vacation investment, covering unexpected cancellations, medical emergencies, and more. Whether you buy it with the cruise line or separately, definitely get it.

Packing Essentials

  1. Bring a carry-on day bag with swimwear, medication, and essentials. Your luggage might not be delivered to your cabin until later on embarkation day and you want everything you need with you.
  2. Pack magnetic hooks  - cruise cabin walls are metal, making these perfect for hanging items and creating extra storage.
  3. Remember cruise-appropriate attire . Check your ship's dress code for formal nights and themed parties.
  4. Pack seasickness remedies  just in case. Even if you've never experienced motion sickness before, it's better to be prepared.
  5. Don't forget power strips  (non-surge protected only) as cabins typically have limited outlets.  **For my complete cruising packing list, go here.

Onboard Experience

  1. Download the cruise line app before departure for easy access to daily schedules, deck plans, and onboard messaging.
  2. Explore the ship on embarkation day. Take a self-guided tour to familiarize yourself with restaurants, pools, theaters, and other amenities.
  3. Make dining and entertainment reservations early, especially for specialty restaurants and popular shows if needed.  When you book your cruise, most ships will allow you to choose your evening dining time (some have flexible dining times as well). Pick the one that works best for your family!
  4. Understand the beverage packages to determine if they're worth the investment for your drinking habits. Many ships let you carry on a bottle of wine per adult and a 12-pack of drinks with limitations. Check this ahead of time.
  5. Budget for gratuities which are either automatically added to your onboard account or paid upfront. I always pay mine upfront--one less thing to manage!
  6. Check out the daily program delivered to your stateroom each evening for the next day's activities and important announcements. Some ships don't do this anymore with the use of the app, so see if your ship does.
  7. Take advantage of sea days to enjoy the ship's amenities without crowds while others are ashore. I usually only do this if it's a port I've been to multiple times, but some people prefer it!

Excursions and Ports

  1. Research shore excursions before sailing to ensure availability of must-do experiences.  Book ASAP after you book your cruise in order to snag the ones you want!
  2. Consider independent tours as alternatives to cruise line excursions, often at lower prices with smaller groups, but know this: if a tour is late to the ship and it's run THROUGH the cruise line, the boat will wait for you. If you book independently and you're late...it will not.
  3. Always return to the ship on time (early is on time!). The ship won't wait if you're late (unless you're on a cruise-organized excursion). Don't be that person running to catch the boat that is already pulling away.
  4. Bring local currency for small purchases at ports or be aware of foreign transaction fees with credit cards if you use them.
  5. Keep your cruise card with you at all times - it's your room key, payment method, and identification for boarding. I like wearing a lanyard with it inside.

 Hidden Cruise Secrets

  1. Free room service is available on many cruise lines, perfect for a private breakfast on your balcony.
  2. Bring your own wine (check your cruise line's policy on corkage fees).
  3. Book your next cruise while onboard to take advantage of exclusive future cruise credits and reduced deposits (read the fine print though).
  4. Ask about loyalty programs even as a first-timer to start earning benefits for future cruises.
  5. Disconnect to reconnect - consider limiting your internet usage to truly enjoy the escape a cruise vacation offers.
