Disney Cruise Line vs. Carnival Cruise Line: Which Is Right for Your Vacation?
This is a question I get asked a lot, and since I've now been on both, let's chat about it! Choosing between Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line involves weighing different vacation experiences, price points, and amenities. Both cruise lines offer memorable vacations, but they cater to different audiences and priorities. Let's break down what makes each unique to help you decide which is the better fit for your next cruise vacation.
Fleet and Destinations
Disney Cruise Line: Disney operates a smaller, premium fleet consisting of six ships: Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, and the newest addition, Disney Treasure. Two more ships, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure, are scheduled to join the fleet soon.
Disney sails to destinations including:
- Caribbean
- Bahamas (including their private island, Castaway Cay)
- Mediterranean
- Alaska
- Northern Europe
- Mexico
- Canada
- Australia and New Zealand
- Coming soon: Singapore (The Disney Adventure)
Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival boasts the largest fleet in the cruise industry with 29 ships, ranging from smaller, older vessels to modern mega-ships like the Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Their sailing length ranges from two days to 29 days, meaning there is an itinerary for you!
Carnival's extensive itineraries include:
- Caribbean (Eastern, Western, Southern)
- Bahamas (including Half Moon Cay on some itineraries)
- Mexico
- Alaska
- Hawaii
- Europe
- Panama Canal
- Australia
- Canada/New England
Carnival offers more departure ports within the United States, making it more accessible for many travelers.
The Family Experience
Disney Cruise Line: Disney has built its reputation on creating magical family experiences:
- Character meet-and-greets throughout the ship
- Age-specific kids' clubs with themed spaces and activities
- Rotational dining with servers who follow you to different restaurants
- Family-friendly entertainment including Broadway-quality Disney shows
- Immersive themed experiences (Marvel, Star Wars, Frozen, etc.)
- Splash areas and pools designed for different age groups
- Movie premieres and Disney movie screenings
Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival offers family-friendly experiences at a more accessible price point:
- Dr. Seuss at Sea program with character breakfasts and parades
- Camp Ocean kids' club divided by age groups
- Family-friendly comedy shows
- WaterWorks aqua parks with slides and water features
- Family Harbor staterooms and lounges on newer ships
- SportSquare with mini-golf, ropes courses, and outdoor recreation
- Video arcades and family-friendly game shows
While both lines cater to families, Disney's immersive theming and character experiences create a more "magical" environment specifically designed around children's interests.
Dining Experience
Disney Cruise Line:
- Rotational dining between three themed restaurants
- Unlimited soft drinks included throughout the ship
- Higher-quality food preparation and presentation
- Adults-only restaurants like Palo and Remy (additional fee)
- Themed dining experiences tied to Disney stories
- Quick-service options and 24-hour room service
- Special dietary accommodations handled exceptionally well
Carnival Cruise Line:
- Main dining rooms plus numerous specialty restaurants
- Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, and other casual dining included
- Specialty dining venues like Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse (additional fee)
- The Chef's Table exclusive dining experience
- 24-hour pizza and ice cream
- Extensive buffet options
- Soda and specialty beverages at additional cost, with beverage packages available
Disney typically receives higher marks for food quality and service, while Carnival offers more variety and casual dining options. We actually really liked the Carnival food at the MDR and lunch spots. Breakfast was okay (pretty much the same daily) and didn't have as many choices as Disney, but it wasn't bad!
Entertainment
Disney Cruise Line:
- Broadway-style Disney shows with elaborate production values
- First-run Disney movies in the Buena Vista Theatre
- Deck parties featuring Disney characters
- Themed days like Pirate Night or Marvel Day at Sea
- Character-driven entertainment throughout the ship
- Disney's Oceaneer Club with themed play areas
- Adult entertainment areas featuring lounges and nightclubs
Carnival Cruise Line:
- Playlist Productions shows
- Dive-in Movies at the pool deck
- Punchliner Comedy Club with family-friendly and adult shows
- Casino gambling
- Live music venues and nightclubs
- Hasbro, The Game Show and other audience participation events
- Seuss-a-palooza Parade and Story Time
Disney focuses on high-production shows based on their intellectual properties, while Carnival offers more varied entertainment options including gambling, comedy clubs, and participatory activities.
Adult Experience
Disney Cruise Line:
- Adults-only areas including Quiet Cove pool and sun deck
- Premium adults-only dining at Palo and Remy
- Senses Spa
- Adults-only lounges and nightclubs
- Tastings (whiskey, wine, etc.)
- Adult-exclusive shore excursions
- No casino
Carnival Cruise Line:
- Serenity Adult-Only Retreat
- Cloud 9 or Carnival Spa
- Extensive casino spaces
- Adults-only comedy shows
- Multiple themed bars and lounges
- Nightclubs and dance venues
- Specialty dining venues
While Disney provides dedicated adult spaces, Carnival offers more variety for adult entertainment, especially with its casinos and extensive nightlife options.
Price Point
The most significant difference between these cruise lines is cost:
Disney Cruise Line:
- Premium pricing, often 40-100% higher than Carnival for comparable itineraries
- Few discounts or promotions but they do happen, especially for Disney Visa holders
- More inclusive pricing model (soft drinks included, fewer upcharges)
- Higher initial cost but fewer onboard expenses
Carnival Cruise Line:
- Value-oriented pricing with frequent sales and promotions
- More accessible entry point for first-time cruisers
- Additional costs for many onboard activities and all beverages
- Lower initial cost but potentially more onboard expenses
A 7-night Caribbean cruise might cost a family of four $6,000-10,000 on Disney, while a similar Carnival itinerary might range from $2,500-5,000.

Choose Disney Cruise Line if:
- You or your children are Disney fans
- You value character experiences and immersive theming
- You prefer a premium experience with higher service levels
- You don't mind paying significantly more for the Disney experience
- You're traveling with children under 12
- You prefer a ship without a casino
Choose Carnival Cruise Line if:

Both cruise lines deliver excellent vacations, but they cater to different priorities and budgets. Disney excels at creating magical moments for families who value the Disney brand, while Carnival offers tremendous value and variety for cruisers of all ages. I really have loved all the cruises I've been on with both lines, and will sail again on both. So it's worth looking into both!
