From Fearful Beginner to Top Leader: An Inspiring Direct Sales Journey with Julie Meyersick
Hi, friend!
Welcome to the Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust Podcast. I’m Lindsay Dollinger—high-school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, and direct seller who empowers women to run their businesses the right way so they can earn the money they deserve and live the life of their dreams.
Now that we got THAT out of the way… let’s get started. ✨
Today on the blog, I’m sharing an interview with my longtime friend and fellow Spanish-teacher-turned-network-marketing-leader, Julie Meyersick. We met in grad school over a decade ago (HOW?!) and now she’s a top leader in her company, living a life she never expected—one built from courage, consistency, and massive personal growth.
Her story is powerful, emotional, and exactly the kind of inspiration so many women in direct sales need to hear.
Let’s dive in.

Meet Julie: Former Spanish Teacher Turned Network Marketing Leader
Julie lives in Parker, Colorado, and like me, she spent over 11 years in the classroom teaching Spanish. Back in 2013, she attended a friend’s party and was introduced to her now-company, Arbonne.
Before going any deeper, Julie made sure to point out:
Every story in network marketing is unique. You can find typical earnings info at earnings.arbonne.com.
Arbonne sells vegan-certified skincare, nutrition, and makeup—and Julie immediately loved the company’s strict ingredient policy (they ban over 2,000 harmful ingredients).
But in the beginning?
She signed up just for the discount.
She had zero intention of building a business.
In her words:
“I was super scared of everything. I can’t believe I’m even doing this interview now because the 2013 version of me never would have.”
Same, girl. SAME.
The Moment Everything Changed
Julie’s interest in safer products grew because of her brother. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, he began researching the connection between chemicals, food, lifestyle, and health.
At first, she thought he was being dramatic.
Then the research hit home.
Then she started paying attention.
But still—she didn’t really do the business. She pretended to. She dabbled. She “tried.” (We both agree: trying = not doing.)
Things stayed that way for four years.
Then tragedy struck.
Her brother’s brain tumor returned.
And this time… he didn’t survive.
Julie describes that year of grief as the turning point she didn’t see coming.
“Watching someone take their last breaths changes you. I realized I wasn’t really living. I was just existing. I wasn’t thriving. I was scared of everything.”
That moment lit a fire in her.
She realized she wanted more.
She realized life was too short to stay scared.
She realized her brother’s passion for health could live on through her.
So one day—ONE DAY—she made a decision:
“I decided to go all in. And once I decided, there was no going back.”
And that’s when everything started changing.
The Power of Personal Development (Even If You Think It’s Weird)
Julie laughs about how she used to think affirmations and personal development were “ridiculous.” Same, honestly. I didn’t believe in any of it until I accidentally won a book giveaway and read The Energy Bus.
But here’s what changed for her:
- She stopped telling herself she “couldn’t.”
- She started feeding her mind with positive truth.
- She learned that your words become your reality.
One of her favorite Jack Canfield quotes:
“An affirmation evokes the experience of already having what you want.”
She started saying things like:
- “Fear and self-doubt have no place in my life.”
- “I am intentional with everything I do.”
- “My words are my wardrobe.”
And when her mindset shifted?
Her ACTION shifted.
Her leadership shifted.
Her entire life shifted.
Balancing Full-Time Teaching and a Growing Business
When Julie started taking her business seriously, she was teaching full time, raising two small kids, and navigating life.
But she said something SO powerful:
“My plate was full… but I added something extra so I could eventually remove things from the plate.”
YES. YES. YES.
She worked in the “nooks and crannies” like so many of us do:
- listening to trainings on her commute
- doing reach-outs while her husband put the kids to bed
- multitasking during dinner prep
- using evenings for presentations and follow-ups
She didn’t magically “find time.”
She created time.
A few shifts she made:
🟣 Create a NOT-to-do list
Remove things that don’t move you toward your goals.
🟣 Cut TV and distractions
(We both agree TV is a giant time suck—I watched Bridgerton once and my business literally dipped that week.)
🟣 Hustle when you need to hustle
This season won’t last forever—but it WILL change your life if you commit.
Eventually, she grew her business enough to step away from teaching full-time. Now she still subs occasionally, but her business (and her life) look totally different.
“But I Could Never Build a Team…” (Yes, You Can.)
Julie’s advice for women afraid to recruit?
“It’s not about you. It’s about THEM.”
Someone out there is:
- praying for more income
- praying for community
- praying for confidence
- praying for purpose
And your invite could be the very thing they need.
Her advice?
Stop making decisions for people.
Stop assuming their answer.
Stop projecting your fears onto them.
Stop deciding they’re “too busy,” “too successful,” or “not interested.”
And to the woman afraid of leading a big team?
Julie explained it perfectly:
“You’re not supposed to do everything for everybody. You create leaders. You don’t carry everyone yourself.”
Amen, sister.
