What It Really Means to Be a Leader in Direct Sales (It’s Probably Not What You Think)
Hi friend! Welcome back to The Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust.
I’m Lindsay Dollinger—high school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, and direct seller turned business mentor. I help women run their direct sales businesses the right way so they can earn more money, build freedom, and live the lives they dream of.
Today’s topic is a big one.
One that gets thrown around a LOT.
One that makes some people excited… and others terrified.
We’re talking about:
Leadership in Network Marketing & Direct Sales
What it means.
What it doesn’t mean.
Why the word “leader” feels so loaded.
And how to confidently step into your leadership role—starting today.
Let’s dig in.
Listen to the show here:
First: You Are Already a Leader (Yes, You!)
This is one of the biggest mindset shifts I ever made.
When I joined my current company, I realized something powerful:
The very moment you enroll…
You become a team of one—
YOU.
You are your first recruit.
You are the person you lead.
You are the person you are responsible to show up for.
So even if:
- You’ve never sponsored anyone
- You don’t have a team yet
- You’re brand new
- You haven’t hit a rank
You are already a leader.
Leadership isn’t something you earn at a certain title.
Leadership is a mindset.
A way of showing up.
A decision.
And it starts the second you say “yes” to your business.
Why Leadership Feels Scary (But Doesn’t Need To)
A lot of people avoid team building because:
- They think leadership = more stress
- They fear disappointing people
- They think they don’t know enough
- They believe they need a huge team
- They think leadership is only for certain ranks
But here’s the truth…
Leadership isn’t a title.
Leadership is how you show up.
And showing up starts small—with YOU.
That’s the empowering part.
What Leadership ActuallyLooks Like in Direct Sales
Let’s simplify this.
Real leadership looks like:
1️⃣ Showing Up for Yourself
This includes:
- Setting boundaries
- Creating office hours
- Not living glued to your phone
- Taking breaks
- Taking care of your health
- Scheduling your work time
- Honoring your goals
- Doing what you tell others to do
When you show up for YOU consistently, others naturally follow your example.
2️⃣ Showing Up for Your Customers
Leadership means:
- Providing excellent customer service
- Following up
- Being on-brand and trustworthy
- Serving, not selling
- Treating customers with care
- Showing consistency in your own product use
People follow leaders they trust.
3️⃣ Showing Up for Your Team (If/When You Have One)
This part is important:
Don’t sponsor people into something you don’t want to support.
If you don’t want a team, that’s fine!
But don’t say yes to someone joining you if you aren’t willing to help them succeed.
If you do sponsor?
Lead them with:
- Communication
- Support
- Realistic expectations
- Systems
- Encouragement
- Integrity
And remember:
Your team won’t do more than you do.
Usually, they’ll do about half.
If you want more:
4️⃣ Showing Up for Your Company
This looks like:
- Representing your brand ethically
- Following policies
- Attending corporate trainings/events
- Staying informed
- Using the tools your company provides
You become someone people feel proud to join.
5️⃣ Being Teachable & Coachable
True leaders are ALWAYS learning.
Most successful leaders invest in:
- Coaches
- Courses
- Masterminds
- Personal development
Why?
Because you don’t grow a business by staying the same.
6️⃣ Being Intentional
Leadership requires intention—not accident.
Being intentional includes:
- Planning content
- Mapping out goals
- Scheduling key business tasks
- Reviewing metrics
- Evaluating what’s working
- Making decisions instead of reacting
You don’t stumble into success.
You create it.
7️⃣ Being Transparent
One of the most overlooked parts of leadership.
People want real.
People want human.
People want to see you.
Transparency looks like:
- Sharing wins and struggles
- Admitting when you need help
- Being open about boundaries
- Letting your team know you use resources (like VAs!)
- Showing the real behind-the-scenes
Transparency builds trust.
And trust builds teams.
🚫 Rank ≠ Leader
Read that again.
Some of the BEST leaders I’ve ever met:
- Don’t have huge teams
- Don’t have fancy titles
- Haven’t made six figures (yet)
- Are still early in their journey
But they:
- Show up
- Serve
- Learn
- Lead by example
- Act with integrity
- Encourage others
- Do the inner work
- Love their customers
- Stay consistent
Leadership is energy.
Not a title.
🌟 You Can Step Into Leadership Today
You don’t need:
- A rank
- A team
- A title
- A massive following
- A “perfect” business
- More time
- More knowledge
You only need:
- A willingness to grow
- A desire to show up
- A commitment to yourself
- And the courage to take the next step
Start today.
Act like the leader you want to become.
Let your future self guide you.
And watch your business shift.
Final Thought
Leadership isn’t a burden.
It’s a responsibility.
A privilege.
And a gift.
You are capable.
You are worthy.
You are ready.
And the direct sales world needs more women leading with heart, integrity, and authenticity.
