Take Action, Don’t Fake Action: The Productivity Shift Every Direct Seller Needs

Hi friend! Welcome back to the Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust Podcast. I’m Lindsay Dollinger—high school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, and direct seller helping women build their businesses the right way so they can earn more, live more, and travel more.

Now that intros are out of the way… let’s get started.

🚗 My First-Ever Car Recording (Because… #EntrepreneurLife)

So, this is the first time I’ve officially recorded a podcast episode in my car. I bought a little clip-on microphone, attached it to my shirt, and hit “record” on the Voice Memos app because—like many of you busy entrepreneurs—I’m always looking for ways to maximize my time.

If the sound quality is terrible, don’t worry… I won’t do this again. 😅
But if it works, this might be my new favorite mini-episode setup.

🎧 The Line That Stopped Me in My Tracks

Last night, I was listening to an episode by Fraser Brooks (definitely follow him if you don’t already—he’s incredible). He was talking about how often we should post on social media, but the part that hit me wasn’t even the content… it was the very end.

He said:

👉 “Take action. Don’t fake action.”

And WOW.
I felt that in my soul.

Because as soon as he said it, I knew it applied to me.
And based on conversations I’ve had with my team, I know it applies to a lot of direct sellers too.

⭐️ We Think We’re Working… But Are We Really?

Here’s the truth that might sting a little:

Many times we feel busy…
We think we’re working our business…
We believe we’re “doing all the things”…

But when we actually reflect?

We realize we were doing tasks that felt productive…
but didn’t actually produce income.

Scrolling isn’t an income-producing activity.
Commenting for 40 minutes straight isn’t either.
Organizing your photos, cleaning up boards, or refreshing graphics?
Still not income-producing.

Those things are useful.
But they aren’t action—they’re fake action.

📊 Why You MUST Track Your Business Activity

I created a business tracker for myself because I was falling into that “fake action” trap constantly.

When I actually tracked:

  • How many people I reached out to
  • How many samples I sent
  • How many follow-ups I made
  • How many parties I booked
  • How many new people I added

…it exposed the gap between what I thought I was doing and what I was actually doing.

Tracking makes things real.

If you say you reached out to 30 people…
But your tracker shows you reached out to 5…
Now you know the truth.

And with truth comes real growth.

⏰ Be Intentional With Your Time (Especially If You Don’t Have Much)

Let’s be real:

Most direct sellers don’t have 3-hour work blocks every day.
You might have:

  • 30 minutes during naptime
  • 20 minutes at lunch
  • 45 minutes after dinner
  • 10 minutes in the car pickup line

Which means every minute has to matter.

If you have ONE hour today, here’s what you should NOT do:

❌ Scroll
❌ Comment endlessly
❌ Redo graphics
❌ Organize your Canva projects
❌ Watch 47 Instagram Stories

Here’s what you should do:

✔️ Invite
✔️ Book
✔️ Follow up
✔️ Make new connections
✔️ Build real relationships
✔️ Ask for referrals
✔️ Host conversations
✔️ Move the needle

Those are income-producing activities.

🎯 Nail Your Top Three Priorities for the Day

Before you start working, know your focus.

Examples:

  • Book parties
  • Follow up with previous buyers
  • Invite to your opportunity
  • Add new people to your network
  • Message past hosts
  • Send voice messages to warm leads

Once you know your top three, break down your time:

If you have 60 minutes…

Option 1:
20 min → Invites
20 min → Follow-ups
20 min → Meeting new people

Option 2 (if one area needs more attention):
40 min → Booking parties
10 min → Follow-ups
10 min → Adding new friends

Your priorities aren’t the same every day—but you must know what they are.

⚡️ Be Honest With Yourself

If you say:

“I’m doing all the things!”

…but you’re only adding 5 Facebook friends a week?
You’re not doing all the things.

If you say:

“I’m following up constantly!”

…but your tracker shows two follow-ups last week?
You’re not following up constantly.

If you say:

“I don’t have time!”

…but you scroll Instagram for 45 minutes at night?
You do have time—you’re just spending it elsewhere.

Honest reflection is uncomfortable.
But honesty leads to clarity.
And clarity leads to success.

🧠 Why We Fall Into “Fake Action”

Fake action feels productive.
It feels safe.
It feels less scary.
It feels comfortable.

Real action?

  • Requires courage
  • Takes intention
  • Feels vulnerable
  • Moves your business forward

This is why mindset work is SO important.

When you feel grounded in:

✨ Your product
✨ Your opportunity
✨ Your mission
✨ Yourself

It becomes so much easier to message people, invite them, and show up fully.

⭐️ “Take Action, Don’t Fake Action” — Your New Mantra

Before you work today, pause and ask yourself:

👉 “Am I taking action or faking action?”

This one question can shift your entire business.

Tonight, I realized I was doing a LOT of fake action this week:

Scrolled more than I invited.
Engaged more than I followed up.
Consumed more than I created.

And I know better.

But awareness is power.
Awareness leads to change.

💛 Final Thoughts: You Deserve a Business Built on Purpose, Not Busyness

Your time is valuable.
Your goals are important.
Your business deserves real, intentional action.

So the next time you sit down to work, remember:

✨ Take action, don’t fake action. ✨

Your future business will thank you.
