What First-Time Cruisers Always Get Wrong About Shore Excursions

Published on

If you’re planning your first cruise, shore excursions are probably one of the things you’re most excited about. Exploring a new destination every day is one of the biggest perks of cruising.

But after helping many clients plan their cruises through At Last I See The World Travel, I’ve noticed that first-time cruisers often make the same mistakes when choosing excursions.

The good news? They’re easy to avoid once you know what to look for.

Here are some of the most common shore excursion mistakes first-time cruisers make — and how to plan smarter instead.

Mistake #1: Thinking You Have to Book Every Excursion Through the Cruise Line

A lot of new cruisers assume the only way to book excursions is through the cruise line.

While cruise line excursions are convenient, they’re not your only option.

Many travelers also book through trusted third-party tour companies that offer:

  • Smaller group tours
  • More unique experiences
  • Often lower prices

Two places I recommend clients explore are:

These sites offer thousands of tours around the world and can sometimes give you a more local, personalized experience.

Mistake #2: Overbooking Your Port Days

When you first start browsing excursions, everything looks amazing.

Snorkeling! Food tours! Jungle adventures! Cultural sites!

But here’s the truth I tell my clients at At Last I See The World Travel:

You don’t need to book an excursion in every single port.

Sometimes the best cruise memories come from simply:

  • Walking around the port town
  • Trying local food
  • Visiting a beach
  • Exploring shops and markets

Leaving a little room for spontaneity can make your cruise feel much more relaxed.

Mistake #3: Not Considering the Distance from Port

This is one area where cruise line excursions can really be helpful.

If the excursion takes you far from the cruise port, booking through the cruise line may give you more peace of mind.

Why?

If a cruise line excursion runs late, the ship will typically wait or assist you in getting to the next port.

Independent tours are great too — just make sure you allow plenty of time to get back to the ship, especially if things like traffic or road closures might happen.

Mistake #4: Waiting Too Long to Book

Popular excursions sell out quickly.

This is especially true for things like:

  • Small group tours
  • Snorkeling excursions
  • Cultural experiences
  • Unique adventure tours

I always recommend my clients start researching excursions well before their cruise so they can secure the experiences they really want (and check out the cancellation policy-many are pretty flexible so you can change your mind!).

Mistake #5: Not Reading Reviews

Photos can look amazing online, but reviews will tell you the real story.

Before booking any excursion, check reviews for:

  • Tour guide quality
  • Group size
  • Transportation
  • Punctual return to the ship

A highly-rated tour can completely elevate your port experience.

Mistake #6: Choosing Excursions That Don’t Match Your Travel Style

One of the biggest planning mistakes I see is travelers choosing excursions based on what sounds popular rather than what they’ll actually enjoy.

For example:

If you prefer relaxation, you may love:

  • Beach days
  • Scenic boat tours
  • Food tastings

If you prefer adventure, you may enjoy:

  • Ziplining
  • ATV tours
  • Snorkeling
  • Hiking

Your cruise excursions should match your personality and travel style.

Mistake #7: Forgetting That Port Days Are Short

Cruise ships usually stay in port for only 6–10 hours.

That means your time in each destination goes by quickly.

Choosing excursions that are well organized and timed properly helps ensure you get the most out of your visit. If you decide to go on your own, I always recommend being back at least an hour before final call–last thing you want is to miss the boat!
