How to Believe in Yourself in Direct Sales (and Why It Determines Your Success)
Why Belief in Yourself Matters More Than Anything Else
Today’s topic is simple but everything in direct sales:
👉 Believing in yourself.
You’ve probably heard the quote:
“Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t—you’re right.” — Henry Ford
And it’s true.
If you don’t believe you can grow your business…
If you don’t believe you can reach the top…
If you don’t believe you’re capable…
…you’ll subconsciously hold yourself back every step of the way.
But the good news?
You can build belief in yourself. And this post walks you through exactly how.
Listen to the podcast:
1. Borrow Someone Else’s Belief Until You Have Your Own
Sometimes belief doesn’t start internally—it starts with someone else seeing your potential before you do.
This person could be:
- an accountability partner
- your upline
- a teammate
- a friend or family member
- your spouse
- a business coach
These are the people who remind you who you are on the days you forget.
Even if you don’t fully believe in yourself yet… borrow theirs. Lean on their confidence until yours grows.
2. What if You Don’t Have Support? Start Here.
It happens.
Some people don’t have supportive friends or family.
Some uplines go missing.
Some haven’t built a team yet.
In those moments, the belief has to come from YOU.
And the #1 way to do that?
3. Personal Development (The Habit That Will Change Your Business and Life)
When I joined my first network marketing company, my upline insisted I read or listen to personal development 10–20 minutes daily.
I resisted HARD.
My excuses looked like:
- “I only have an hour a day to work my business.”
- “I already know how to motivate myself.”
- “I don’t need this woo-woo stuff.”
(Spoiler: I did need it.)
But once I started reading, everything shifted.
Personal development taught me:
- confidence
- leadership
- business basics
- sales psychology
- belief
- how to build relationships
- how to actually grow a direct sales business
I now have:
- dozens of books I love
- shelves filled with PD staples
- hundreds of podcast episodes saved
- a waterproof Bluetooth speaker in my shower 😂
Because yes—I listen to personal development everywhere.
Personal development will make you believe in yourself… if you do it consistently.
Some of my favorite beginner-friendly PD books
(I’ll link these in the show notes if you’re reading this on the podcast blog!)
- The Compound Effect – Darren Hardy
- The Miracle Morning – Hal Elrod
- Girl, Wash Your Face – Rachel Hollis
- You Are a Badass – Jen Sincero
- Atomic Habits – James Clear
4. Start Tracking Your Wins (No Matter How Small)
One of the quickest ways to believe in yourself is to actually see proof of your progress.
Create a “wins journal.”
Write down every success:
- you gave out a sample
- you booked a party
- you posted consistently
- you gained a new follower
- you remembered to schedule your content
- you ranked up
- you earned a bonus
- you had a repeat customer
Nothing is too small to celebrate.
When you look back at your progress each quarter, you’ll realize you’re growing—even when it doesn’t feel like it.
5. Get an Accountability Partner
This is HUGE.
Your accountability partner should be:
- someone not directly in your downline
- someone motivated
- someone who won’t sugarcoat things
- someone with similar goals
What you’ll do together:
- weekly check-ins
- share goals
- brainstorm ideas
- troubleshoot problems
- celebrate wins
- talk through hard moments
Mine is in the same company but on a totally different team. We voice memo every Monday. Sometimes it’s 5 minutes; sometimes it’s 20. But it keeps us moving forward.
6. Lean on Your Upline—the Right Way
Your upline is NOT there to:
- do your work for you
- hold your hand
- let you vent every day in the team page
But they ARE there to:
- mentor you
- strategize with you
- help you troubleshoot
- encourage you when you’re stuck
- support you in setting goals
If you’re struggling? Message them privately.
Not in the team group chat. Not in a pity post.
They are there to help you—use them.
7. Support From Outside the Business Matters Too
A spouse, a parent, a sibling, or a best friend can:
- keep you grounded
- remind you to step away from your phone
- celebrate your wins
- encourage you when you get discouraged
- give you an outside perspective
Their support may not be business-specific…
but it can be emotionally and mentally grounding.
8. Consider Hiring a Coach
A coach is literally someone you PAY to:
- believe in you
- hold you accountable
- call you out
- help you grow
- strategize with you
- challenge your thinking
If you’ve invested in one… USE THEM.
Don’t be shy—they’re literally your business partner in growth.
9. Take Care of Your Physical Health
This part might surprise you, but it’s essential.
👉 Healthy lifestyle = healthy mindset = strong belief in yourself.
When you:
- eat clean
- get enough sleep
- move your body
- hydrate
- release stress
- support your mental health
…you show up better in your business.
It’s almost impossible to feel confident when you’re:
- exhausted
- sluggish
- not fueling your body
- overwhelmed
- sedentary
Success in business starts with success in your body.
