The Journey to Podcasting and Public Relations
Angel’s entry into public relations was anything but linear. After navigating the job market post-recession and exploring various roles, she found herself naturally gravitating towards PR in her work as a virtual assistant. Her story is a testament to listening to your passions and leaning into your expertise. When it comes to podcasting, Angel initially hesitated, overwhelmed by the equipment and logistics. However, her determination led her to embrace the medium, focusing on topics she loves, like organization and entrepreneurship.

Angel’s candidness about her early podcasting hurdles is something every nascent podcaster should hear. She shared how she initially overthought the process, intimidated by the polished podcasts of major networks. Her advice? Just start! Whether you’re recording in your closet for better acoustics or using free tools like GarageBand or Anchor (now Spotify’s podcasting platform), the key is to dive in, learn, and adapt.

Finding Your Podcasting Groove
A major theme throughout our discussion was embracing imperfection and authenticity. Angel emphasized that your first episodes won’t be perfect, and that’s okay! It’s all about finding your voice and connecting with your audience. She recommends planning out at least ten episodes before launching, ensuring you have a clear direction and purpose. And remember, your podcast will evolve—don’t be afraid to pivot and rebrand as you grow.
Guest Etiquette and Professionalism
Angel and I also touched on the nuances of podcasting as a guest. We agreed on the importance of professionalism—prioritizing punctuality, preparation, and promotion of the episodes you’re featured in. Podcasts are an excellent platform for sharing your expertise and connecting with new audiences, but always remember the power of a thank you and the impact of actively promoting the episode on your channels. You’ll be able to tell from the episode this is a big pet peeve of mine!
Pitching to Podcasts: Do’s and Don’ts
As a PR expert, Angel knows the importance of a well-crafted pitch. Whether you’re pitching yourself as a guest or vice versa, understanding the show’s format and audience is crucial. Tailor your pitch, follow instructions, and, most importantly, engage authentically with the podcast’s community before reaching out. If a particular podcast doesn’t resonate with your brand, it’s okay to pass—quality over quantity is key.
