The One Business Audit Every Direct Seller Should Do (But Most Never Think To Ask For)
Hi, friend! Welcome to the Passports, Profits and Pixie Dust. I’m Lindsay Dollinger — high-school Spanish teacher, dog mom, world traveler, and direct seller who teaches women how to grow their direct sales businesses the right way so they can earn what they deserve, live the life they dream about, and travel the world while doing it.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way… let’s dive in!
Today’s blog is short, powerful, and one of the most transformational tips you’ll ever use in your business — but most people never do it.
When Was the Last Time Someone Else Critiqued Your Business?
If you’ve never done this — or if it’s been a long time — I want to lovingly nudge you to do it this week:
👉 Ask someone you trust to critique your business.
Not your best friend.
Not your favorite downline who tells you everything you do is amazing.
Not the teammate who started last week.
You want someone who:
- Has experience
- Knows the industry
- Is honest
- Is at least one step ahead of where you want to go
- Has the results you’re working toward
This could be:
- Your upline
- A sideline
- Someone from another team
- A mentor
- A leader in your company
The key: they can’t be so close to you that they sugarcoat what they see.
Why This Matters So Much
We all have blind spots in our business.
We “think” we’re doing certain things consistently…
… until someone else points out the truth.
For example:
- You think you’ve been posting regularly — but your last business post was in September.
- You think people know what you sell — but there’s nothing on your feed that shows it.
- You think you’re being visible — but no one has seen your face in weeks.
- You think your sales have been “pretty good” — until someone looks at the numbers and says, “Actually, your growth is 1%, and that’s not matching your six-figure goal.”
A fresh pair of eyes changes everything.
What to Ask For in Your Critique
It doesn’t have to be formal. This could literally be a 10–15 minute Zoom or a quick voice chat.
Ask your mentor/friend/upline to look at:
1. Your Social Media Profiles
Have them scroll like a stranger would.
Ask them:
- What do you immediately notice?
- Do you know what I sell?
- Do you know who I am?
- Would you follow me?
- Would you trust me?
If they say:
- “I barely see you.”
- “I didn’t know you sold ____.”
- “You share way too many memes.”
- “I don’t see your face at all.”
… then that’s your wake-up call.
2. Your Content Frequency
Consistency matters.
Posting once a week won’t cut it if you’re building a business on social media.
If they scroll your feed and it’s:
- All shares
- No original content
- No value
- No education
- No product presence
- No personal presence
Then you know where to focus.
3. Your Business Numbers
Every industry has versions of:
- Rank trackers
- Compensation structure
- Customer retention numbers
- Team growth stats
- Volume trends
Ask them:
- “What do you see here that I’m missing?”
- “Where are my weak spots?”
- “Where am I strong?”
- “If this was your business, what would you fix first?”
Many times, what feels fine to us looks VERY different to someone who views it from the outside.
Choose Someone Who Will Tell You the Truth (Even If It Stings a Little)
This isn’t about being judged.
It’s not about being embarrassed.
It’s not about feeling “behind.”
It’s about growth.
Every time I’ve asked for this kind of critique, I’ve walked away thinking:
👉 Wow… I would have NEVER caught that on my own.
And that’s the whole point.
Try This Bonus Step: Ask Someone Outside the Industry
Ask a friend NOT in direct sales:
“When you look at my Facebook profile, what are the first five things you notice?”
Their answers might shock you — in the best way.
If they say:
- “You share a lot of quizzes.”
- “I don’t know what you do for a living.”
- “I never see YOU in your posts.”
… then you now know exactly what to fix.
Your audience sees your profile differently than you do. Listen to their feedback.
Why This Works So Well
Because we ALL get comfortable.
We all slip.
We all forget.
We all get lazy… even when we don’t mean to.
I once did a challenge where I went live every day for a month.
After the challenge ended, guess what?
I stopped going live daily.
Not because I didn’t want to.
But because life happened, routines slipped, and I didn’t even notice until someone else pointed it out.
That’s why we need outside eyes — regularly.
Make This Part of Your Business Routine
I personally try to do this every few months.
If you’re in a season of growth, do it even more often.
Put it on your calendar.

Ask for feedback.
Take the guidance and implement it.
This ONE habit could be the catalyst that changes your entire business trajectory.
