24 Hours in Amsterdam (Before Your River Cruise)

Published on

Want to plan out your 24 hours in Amsterdam before boarding your river cruise?

Amsterdam is a beautiful city to explore! Here are some ideas on what you could do before you board your river cruise.

🛬 Day 1: Arrival Day

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM | Arrival & Easy Lunch

  • After the long flight, keep it light and cozy. Head to CafĂ© de Jaren or Broodje Bert for a simple Dutch sandwich or soup with canal views.

  • Grab a coffee to help adjust to the time zone.

12:30 PM – 3:00 PM | Gentle Exploring

  • Walk through Jordaan (picturesque neighborhood with canals, boutiques, and little art galleries).

  • If you’re up for it, stop by the Anne Frank House (book ahead). It’s emotional and impactful but manageable in terms of time.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Canal Cruise (Optional for Day 1)

  • If it’s winter and evenings are getting dark early (around 5 PM), a late afternoon heated canal cruise is lovely—you’ll see the golden light shift to evening.

  • OR, if you’d rather save the cruise for tomorrow, just wander the Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes) and pop into shops.

5:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Early Dinner

  • After jet lag, a hearty Dutch dinner is comforting. Options:

    • Moeders (homey Dutch food, fun dĂ©cor).

    • The Pancake Bakery (famous giant Dutch pancakes, both savory & sweet).

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Romantic Evening Walk

  • Stroll the canals at night—the lantern-lit bridges are magical.

  • Stop for a nightcap at a brown cafĂ© (like CafĂ© Papeneiland) if you’re awake.

  • Head to the hotel early—rest is key to enjoy tomorrow.

🌅 Day 2: Morning & Midday (Until 3 PM Boat Boarding)

8:00 AM – 9:30 AM | Breakfast

  • Try Winkel 43 for their legendary Dutch apple pie (yes, people eat it for breakfast!) and coffee.

  • Or, if you prefer savory, Dignita Hoftuin is a beautiful, calm spot with fresh breakfast options.

9:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Culture & Stroll

  • Van Gogh Museum (book tickets ahead—plan 1.5–2 hrs).

  • If art isn’t your top priority, you could do:

    • Rijksmuseum (Dutch masters & Rembrandt’s Night Watch).

    • Or a leisurely walk through Vondelpark if you’d rather be outdoors.

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM | Lunch

  • Cozy lunch near Museumplein at Blushing Amsterdam or Bakers & Roasters (Kiwi/Brazilian-style brunch cafĂ©).

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Final Canal Stroll & Boarding

  • Walk back toward your boat via the canals, soaking in the last sights.

  • Maybe grab a last stroopwafel or souvenir before boarding.
